Melini releases Deep Shock teaser
After several false starts and a couple of years the promotional teaser for Davide Melini’s short giallo film DEEP SHOCK has finally arrived! Will it manage to channel the spirit of Argento and Bava and make that rarest of beasts...a decent modern giallo? The intitial teaser shows a lot of promise and Cosi Perversa certainly has high hopes for it.
Shot in 4k it is certain to look as shiny as a razor blade and with an intriguing synopsis which informs us that “Sarah can't completely overcome the deaths of her grandfather and her older sister. The trauma and lack of sleep cause her to embark on a strange journey of apparitions and murders, apparently caused by her mind..." promises something perhaps dreamlike, surreal and hopefully visceral.
Currently the film is in post-production and should be out this summer after the directors other upcoming short Lion. Writer/director Melini, who was one of the emerging Italian talents picked out in the Contemporary Italy article, is promising to bring the giallo back and his references to Argento and Bava appear to reach much further than just a honourary title reference or easy marketing gimmick.
Shot in Spain, Melini is based in Malaga, the film features an experienced cast that might not be well known to English speaking audiences such as Muireann Bird, George Bracebridge, Lorna Larkin, Erica Prior and Luis Fernández de Eribe. However some of you may recognise Francesc Pagès who has had roles in the American horror DARKNESS and the Spanish arthouse take on Snow White -BLANCANIEVES.

If British and American audiences are unlikely to recognise those in front of the camera, the work of those behind it is a different story. While Melini has learned his craft not just through his own short films, several of which have won awards, but he has also acted as a second unit or assistant director on the major TV series ROME, PENNY DREADFUL and INTO THE BADLANDS as well as the much maligned Dario Argento film MOTHER OF TEARS.
Meanwhile his production crew has a CV that has seen them work on major Hollywood films such as TITANIC; THE AVENGERS; THOR and QUANTOM OF SOLACE. No horror but hopefully these experiences and expectations have worked their way into DEEP SHOCK. Additionally with 2016 Goya award nominee Juanma Postigo as his DOP and the use of state of the art cameras I am expecting something quite sumptuous to look at and if the trailer is anything to go it certainly will be. But enough waffle, check out the trailer below and make up your own mind.
Not to mention Giulio De Gaetano who has composed a terrific if brief score on the teaser reminiscent of the work of Goblin. Suprisingly this appears to be his first credit but I have no doubt it won't be his last.
