Top 5 scenes in Fulci's zombie movies
Ok, so there is undoubtedly going to be a lot of debate caused over not just the order but also what should be included in a list like this, so I have eschewed all critical and objective perspective and gone on good old fashioned gut (hah) feeling to compile this, my, list.
1. Zombie Vs Shark (Zombie Flesh Eaters / Zombi 2
There is no doubt in my mind when I think of Lucio Fulci's zombie movies I immediately think of a zombie vs. a shark and how I felt when I first witnessed that spectacle up on the screen.
Sure it is one of several iconic scenes in the film but for me, forget the worm face zombie or the eyeball scene this perfectly captures the magnificence and the absurdity of the film.
For years I wondered how they managed to perform such a stunt not only on a low budget but back in a time where practical effects were everything. Allegedly, the shark was fed meat and sedatives before being filmed in a large salt water tank but even so this is still an incredibly dangerous and breathtaking stunt to perform, so much so you forget all about Auretta Gay’s unnecessarily nude body.
2. One in the eye of the censors (Zombie Flesh Eaters / Zombi 2)
As stated there are several not only stand out but genre defining moments in ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS and that film also gives us number two on my list in the form of Dr Menards wife (Olga Karlatos) having a large splintered piece of wood graphically shoved into her right eyeball. Surprisingly for a Fulci flick, her actual death occurs off screen.
3. Knife job (House by the Cemetery)
Now I find HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY a bit of a weird one, more a supernatural mad doctor horror than a zombie film but it's close enough for me to count here.
Clearly one of the best and most memorable scenes in this movie happens relatively early on when a girl, looking for her lover in the aforementioned House gets brutally stabbed through the head showcasing some fantastic work by Gianni De Rossi.
4. Was it something you ate? (City of the Living Dead)
It would have been easy, not to mention justified to have gone for Giovanni Lombardo Radice’s character, the sexual deviant Bob, getting drilled through the head in this movie but rather I have plumped for the scene in which Rosie (Daniela Doria) appears to vomit up what is actually real sheep intestines making possibly the grossest scene of the movie and certainly gives the Exorcist a run for its money. No wonder Soavi decided to get behind the camera rather than stay in front of it.
5. And you thought Exeter was bleak (The Beyond)
For something different I have gone with the final scene of THE BEYOND, with our lead characters appearing in the barren landscape of the beyond. Nothing says bleak and empty more than this scene, with their eyes white and lifeless the shot makes us question is there more to this earthly plane and what lies in wait for us on the other side.
